CONSTELLATION CYCLES
June 2017 - June 2018
Seward Park
East Broadway and Jefferson Street
Manhattan, New York
Commissioned by the NYC Parks Department as part of the Art in the Parks: UNIQLO Park Expressions Grant.
Constellation is an architectural sculpture, construction performance, and series of urban discussions. The site-specific sculptural pavilion is composed of interlocked modules that are re-configured seasonally in three different transformations over the course of the exhibition. Each configuration provides a new topography for seating, snacking, gathering and socializing and is accompanied by public programming.
‘Constellation’ aims to activate an underused public space.
The three different color families (white, blue-green and red-pink) of the graphics printed on specific plywood faces correspond to each of the respective cycles. In a kind of “Manhattanhenge” moment, the plywood faces of each cycle’s graphics will align with the shadows that will fall on those plywood faces at three key moments: Cycle 1/White on the Autumn Equinox (Sep 22, 2017 @ 4:03PM), Cycle 2/Blue-Green on the Winter Solstice (Dec 21, 2017 @ 11.28AM), and Cycle 3/Red-Pink on the Spring Equinox (March 20, 2018 @ 12:15 PM).
