CONSTELLATION is a human-scale architectural sculpture, construction performance, and series of urban discussions. The artwork seeks to activate the underused plaza in Seward Park as a transformative community public space. The site-specific sculptural pavilion is composed of interlocked modules that are re-configured seasonally in three different transformations over the course of the exhibition. Each configuration provides a new topography for seating, snacking, gathering and socializing and is accompanied by public programming.
To inaugurate each new configuration, CONSTELLATION is activated periodically by curated civic conversations, panel and community discussions and workshops focusing on urban issues in NYC: transportation, urban development and shared futures based on food, culture, and diversity.
The three different color families (white, blue-green and red-pink) of the graphics printed on specific plywood faces correspond to each of the respective cycles. In a kind of “Manhattanhenge” moment, the plywood faces of each cycle’s graphics will align with the shadows that will fall on those faces at three key moments: Cycle 1/White on the 2017 Autumn Equinox, Cycle 2/Blue-Green on the 2017 Winter Solstice, and Cycle 3/Red-Pink on the 2018 Spring Equinox.
