+ Exterior grade wood, plywood, hardware, paint
+ Created during The Laundromat Project Create Change Artist Residency
Fabrication: Sunset Park Fabrications
Thanks to the Chinatown BID for their team's onsite support for each event.
This duo of 'INTERSECTIONS' benches was designed to host public storytelling circles for the REFLECTIVE URBANISMS: Mapping New York Chinatown project. These vibrantly colored seats can be reconfigured for different scenarios. The nooks and corners invite us to find new ways to dialogue. Following this series of community engagement events, the benches have been donated to liven up public spaces in Manhattan Chinatown.
Installed outdoors in both Columbus Park and on historic Doyers Street, these public events invited the Chinatown community to share stories about Chinatown buildings. Stories were told: from growing up in tenements now demolished on Bayard Street, to attending Chinese school for over a decade on Mott Street, to partying at epic wedding banquets at Port Arthur and China Lane, to the weekly routines of grocery shopping and eating favorite dishes at local restaurants.
